Hot weather tips – preparing for hot weather days!
Australians experiences extremely high temperatures over summer. Be prepared by following our hot weather tips.
Summer can be hot for everyone. For those living with a disability, an inability to sweat, increased pain, fatigue, heat sensitivity, and inflammation in organs or joints make warmer days significantly more uncomfortable.
While we cannot change the weather, we can work to make our clients and loved ones as comfortable as possible. This also applies to anyone you know who might be vulnerable – reach out, check they are ok and follow our hot weather tips.
Be prepared!
Know the specific needs of your family member or client so you’re prepared and ready for the hot conditions.
We recommend staying indoors in an air-conditioned environment. If you make plans to have a day out, consider the preventative actions the destination may have undertaken – Is it indoors or outdoors?, Is there air-conditioning?, Is there access to shade and drinking water?
If your client would like to go outside, follow the below hot weather tips to be Sun Smart:
Slip on protective clothing
Slop on SPF 30 or higher broad- spectrum, water resistant sunscreen
Slap on a hat
Seek shade
Slide on sunglasses
Sip on at least 3 litres of water per day to avoid dehydration (ONCALL’s addition)
